English At Large
Overview
English At Large is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing English language and American culture learning services for adult immigrants across Greater Boston.
Currently, tutors face challenges when searching for resources to use with their tutees, relying on a physical library and a shared Google Drive folder. This process often takes significant time, resulting in a lengthy trial-and-error period to find materials that best fit their tutees' needs. Additionally, as the collection of books and resources continues to grow, admins are seeking a more reliable and scalable solution for inventory management.
I am a UX designer leading a team that includes one project manager, one technical lead, and ten full-stack developers to address these challenges. The project timeline spans from October 2024 to May 2025.
What I did
In the initial weeks of the project, I met with the client (admin), to gather requirements and define the problem scope. To gain deeper insights, I conducted user interviews with two office assistants and two tutors, identifying their pain points and collaborating to ideate features they wanted in the digital catalog.
Using these findings, I synthesized key requirements and began creating mid-fidelity wireframes. To ensure my designs aligned with the technical constraints, I collaborated with the project manager and technical lead, validating workflows and incorporating automated solutions such as the ISBN API.
During the high-fidelity prototyping phase, I held regular walkthroughs with the client to present designs and gather feedback. Once the screens were finalized, I handed off the designs to the developers and conducted ongoing quality checks, ensuring the implementation closely matched the Figma designs in both styling and functionality.

English At Large Digital Catalog allows tutors to search, check-out, and keep track of their books as well as save online resources directly to their account. Admins can efficiently manage book inventory, online resources, and the user database.
